The Letters of Lewis Carroll: Morton Cohen's annotated proofs

The Letters of Lewis Carroll: Morton Cohen's annotated proofs

Dodgson, Charles L. (1832–1898). The letters of Lewis Carroll. Two volumes. Edited by Morton N. Cohen [1921–2017] with the assistance of Roger Lancelyn Green [1918–1987]. London: Macmillan London Limited, 1979. Long form galley proofs. Approximately 1200 pages, printed, photocopied, and typewritten, with extensive holograph annotations. Some significant creasing to pages from heavy use, but generally sound.

A unique set of long-form galley proofs for both volumes of The Letters of Lewis Carroll, with extensive emendations by the editors. Produced in August 1977, these proofs represent the first stage of the publication. There are numerous corrections in several hands – presumably both Cohen’s and Green’s – and typed insertions representing newly discovered letters, as well as photocopies of illustrations and other materials for the book. A fascinating glimpse into the working methods of these two influential scholars, founding members of the Lewis Carroll Society.
