Inscribed by the author, "To Marvin Sadik, with all good wishes, Robert Oppenheimer, Worcester 5/27/56."
An important political and philosophical statement by the great theoretical physicist, published the year after his ordeal before the United States Atomic Energy Commission during the McCarthy era. The recipient was Marvin Sadik (1932 – 2013), a recent graduate of Harvard who was then serving as a curatorial assistant at the Worcester Art Museum. 1969 he was appointed director of the National Portrait Gallery, where he served until his retirement. Sadik met Oppenheimer at the three-day conference of the Committee on the Humanities of the American Council of Learned Societies, which was convened at the Worcester Art Museum.
