1940 Hawaiian Japanese annual and directory -- one of a handful of surviving copies
日布時事布哇年鑑 / Nippu jiji hawai nenkan 1940 = Hawaiian Japanese annual and directory. Honolulu: Nippu Jiji, 1940. 7¼ in (19 cm). Illustrated with maps and advertisements. Binding worn and tape repaired; piece missing from margin of one page; frontispiece map of Hawaii loose and lacking outer half of the folding portion. An unattractive but mostly complete copy of a very scarce publication.
The thirteenth edition of this guide published annually for the Japanese American population of Hawaii. Organized by the major islands, the directory includes names and addresses of residents – including birthplace and profession -- as well as business listings and useful information on government offices, agricultural production, sporting events, and immigration procedures. First published in 1927, the directory ceased publication in 1941.
This is a rare survival: only four copies are recorded in institutional collections (Stanford, Duke, Michigan, National Diet Library).
