Daniel Defoe. Christmas Frolics on the Island of Despair (1868)

Daniel Defoe. Christmas Frolics on the Island of Despair (1868)

[DEFOE, Daniel]. Henry J. BYRON, Playbill for Robinson Crusoe; or, Friday and the fairies. Theatre Royal, Covent Garden [December 26th, 1868]. [London: Eugene Rimmel, [1868]). 4 p.; 20.6 cm. x 13 cm

A highly detailed program for the performance of this strange pastiche. A note on the bottom of the third page notes that “This programme is Perfumed and Supplied by Eugene Rimmel.” Advertisements for Rimmel’s perfumed products populate the final page. One wonders what scent he chose to evoke Crusoe – peach and hibiscus, or salt and sweat? The only other copy we’ve located is in the Johnson ephemera collection at the Bodleian.
